Member states of the UNESCO on Thursday will vote on a resolution proposal that denies any Jewish connection to the Aqsa Mosque compound and the Western Wall (al-Buraq Wall) and their surrounding areas.
The proposal presented by the Palestinians along with Egypt Algeria Morocco Lebanon Oman Qatar and Sudan condemns Israel on several issues related to Jerusalem and its holy sites.
According to Haaretz newspaper the proposal acknowledges that the city of Jerusalem is holy to Islam Christianity and Judaism but it mentions the Aqsa Mosque and al-Buraq Wall and Plaza by name as sacred only to the Muslim Nation.
Israel has made diplomatic efforts recently to block the resolution or at least soften it and managed in swaying the positions of a few member states.
The UNESCO executive board had issued a similar resolution last April with the support of a number of European states headed by France. That resolution strained the diplomatic relationship between Israel and France before the latter succumbed to Israeli pressures and promised that it would not support any step against Israel in the future.
