New monument for martyr Nazzal in Ramallah

Saturday 1-July-2017

A group of activists erected on Friday afternoon a new monument honoring the Palestinian martyr Khalid Nazzal in Ramallah city.

The activists said that erecting the new monument came in response to the demolition of Nazzal’s memorial in Jenin.

The Israeli occupation forces destroyed the old monument at dawn Friday after storming Jenin city amid violent confrontations that resulted in injuring two Palestinian children.

Khalid Nazzal is a leader in the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) who was assassinated by the Israeli Mossad in the Greek capital Athens with four bullets that pierced his forehead and killed him instantly.

Born in Qabatiya town in Jenin province in 1948 Nazzal served as the secretary of the DFLP central committee and led its military wing and militant groups in the Palestinian territories from Rome.

Nazzal was married to the women’s rights activist and writer Rima Nazzal and had a son and a daughter. He is the son of Haj Ahmed Nazzal who resisted the British Mandate alongside Sheikh Izz al-Din al-Qassam and his companions.

During his military command the DFLP carried out several anti-occupation operations including the Jerusalem operation in 1975 where a commando group stormed the building of the Israeli Ministry of Tourism Trade and Industry and managed to kill a number of Israelis. Two of the DFLP fighters were martyred while a third was arrested.

The DFLP carried out other qualitative resistance operations such as Ma’alot-Tarshiha on 15th May 1974 Bisan on 19th November 1974 and Jerusalem on 2nd April 1984.
