Norway rescinds siege Norwegian official meets Haneyya in Gaza

Monday 19-March-2007

GAZA (PIC)– PA premier Ismael Haneyya has received Norwegian deputy foreign minister Raymon Juhanson in Gaza city Monday in the first such step by a senior European diplomat to the PA government for over a year.

Juhanson’s “welcomed” visit follows his country’s decision to recognize the PA unity government rescind the unjust economic siege on the Palestinian people and normalize ties with Haneyya’s new government.

Norwegian foreign minister Jonas Gahr Støre had earlier telephoned his Palestinian counterpart Dr. Ziad Abu Amre informing him of the decision and inviting him to visit Oslo. Støre also expressed willingness to visit Palestine.

According to Støre the Hamas-Fatah alliance was a “historic event” that the international community must exploit to achieve lasting peace in the region warning that the alternative of such unity government would be endless cycle of violence.

In addition Støre called on the Israeli occupation government to release the 800-million-dollars PA tax revenue money it had withheld since one year after Hamas won a landslide victory in the PA legislative elections last year.

The USA was and still leading an international economic embargo on the Palestinian people at Israel’s request in order to force the PA government into recognizing the Israeli occupation of Palestine rejecting legitimate resistance against the occupation and accepting previous deals signed between PLO and Israel.

Hamas under study:
Meanwhile Norwegian researcher Henry Borg visited office of Hamas deputies in Nablus city “to know more about Hamas”.

Hamas lawmakers Dawood Abu Seir and Mona Mansour met with Borg and briefed him on the reality of Israel in a bid to amend the reverted picture in the West about Israel as an “oppressed” state and the Palestinians as the “oppressors”.

Henri is conducting a research study on Hamas’s evolution since it was established till it came to governance to enable him “refute the wrong impression inculcated in the Westerners’ minds about the Palestinian people”.

During the discussion Abu Sier affirmed that the EU government should have come forward and sat with Hamas to know its views before unfavorably judging it in blind adoption of the Israeli story.

Mansour for her part urged European journalists researchers and intellectuals to reveal the truth completely to champion the Palestinian people’s legal rights and not to distort the shiny picture of the Palestinian people and their struggle for freedom before the world.
