Number of Palestinian administrative detainees climbs to 600

Monday 16-May-2022

The number of Palestinian administrative detainees in Israeli jails has recently increased to more than 600 people including two women three children and six lawmakers a local rights group said.

“Despite the administrative prisoners’ boycott of Israeli courts since the beginning of the current year the occupation authorities have deliberately escalated the issuance of administrative orders against Palestinian detainees” the Palestine Center for Prisoners Studies (PCPS) said in a recent report.

“It has issued over 616 new or extended administrative orders since the beginning of the current year which has raised the number of administrative detainees to more than 600” PCPS explained.

PCPS director Riyadh al-Ashqar said that the upsurge in the number of administrative detainees resulted from the intensive arrests that had been carried out during the current year and reached more than 2500 arrest cases.

However most of those arrested were released after detaining and interrogating them for days or weeks while many others were transferred to administrative detention because the Israeli military and security authorities had no tangible proof condemning them except for claims about the presence of evidence in “secret files” proving that they constituted security threats to Israel Ashqar explained.
