Oglo urges Palestinians to form unity government

Wednesday 20-December-2006

GAZA (PIC)– OIC secretary general Akmal Al-Din Ihsan Oglo on Wednesday urged all Palestinian factions and forces to agree on the formation of a national unity government the soonest.

Oglo addressing a joint press conference with PA premier Ismail Haneyya in Gaza described the Palestinian agreement on a ceasefire as a “positive step” that would serve the Palestinian people.

He said that the OIC had tabled an initiative with the Palestinians to halt the infighting represented in ending all armed demonstrations forming an independent investigative committee and neutralizing security apparatuses in political differences. He underlined that both the PA presidency and premiership welcomed the initiative.

Oglo explained that the independent committee would group seven judges: two Palestinians one appointed by the presidency and one appointed by the government and three others to be appointed by the OIC general secretariat in agreement with both the presidency and the government.

He said that recent events displayed the importance of expediting the formation of a national unity government adding that it was imperative to solve pending problems and differences over formation of that government.

For his part Haneyya said that he hoped that the crisis would end soon and told reporters that he did not receive an official invitation to visit Jordan. King Abdullah of Jordan had said he would invite both Haneyya and PA chief Mahmoud Abbas to Amman to patch up differences between Fatah and Hamas.
