PA cabinet urges Abbas to resume talks on unity government immediately

Monday 4-December-2006

Gaza – Displaying utmost concern for the interests of the Palestinian people the PA government has urged Abbas on Sunday to immediately resume talks on unity government from the point where it ended and not to close doors of dialogue.

The call came during the weekly cabinet meeting of the PA government at the backdrop of a number of adverse statements uttered by Abbas and a number of his associates considering the talks on unity government as reaching a deadlock.

“The national harmony is the basis that serves the supreme interests of the Palestinian people and therefore talks on the coalition government based on the national harmony document must immediately resume and from the point where they ended” the cabinet decided during the session.

The council of ministers furthermore hailed PA premier Ismail Haneyya’s Arab tour that according to the ministers gave the Palestinian issue a strong push forward and produced good results in soothing the suffering of the Palestinian people due to the unjust siege.

In a related matter MP Muna Mansour of Hamas bloc in the PLC expressed surprise over Abbas and other Palestinian factions’ extreme concern to preserve the truce with Israel while closing talks on unity government with their Palestinian brethren in Hamas.

She stressed that all Palestinian factions should advance the national interests of the Palestinian people over their factional and personal advantages in order to bail the Palestinian people out of the current political crisis.

While in Qatar Haneyya succeeded in getting a pledge from the Qatari Emir Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani of covering the salaries of 40000 PA public teachers in addition to a promise of paying salaries of the PA health workers if the need arises.

The Qatari good news was an unprecedented step since the wing-crippling US-led economic embargo was imposed on the Palestinian and the PA government nine months ago.

The praiseworthy Qatari initiative was also applauded by the Islamic bloc of the PA public teachers considering the step as a breakthrough and the fruit of Haneyya’s tour.

Haneyya’s government was paying big attention to the education and health sectors in the PA-run lands being the most important sectors among others.

In return the bloc called on PA employees to rally behind their elected government that as evident spares no effort in striving to break the repressive financial and political blockade imposed on the Palestinian people.
