PA foreign ministry condemns British terror label of Hamas

Saturday 20-November-2021

The Palestinian Authority (PA) ministry of foreign affairs has denounced a British decision designating the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas as a terrorist organization calling it “an unjustified attack on the Palestinian people.”

In a statement the foreign ministry described the move as Britain’s “acquiescence to Israeli pressure” pointing out that the decision came one week after Israeli premier Naftali Bennett demanded his British counterpart on the sidelines of the climate summit meeting in Glasgow to label Hamas as a terror group.”

The ministry warned that such step would put obstacles in the way of achieving peace and obstruct the efforts to shore up the ceasefire understandings and reconstruct Gaza following the last Israeli aggression in May.

The ministry also stressed the need for the British government to renounce its double standard policies and reverse its decision against Hamas immediately.

It said that it would discuss with the Palestinian leadership the repercussions of this decision for the Palestinian relations with Britain and its role as a contributor to any future political process regarding the Palestinian question.

British home secretary Priti Patel said Friday she decided to designate Hamas as a terrorist organization and ban any support or solidarity with it.

The move which will be pushed in the UK parliament next week could see Hamas supporters and activists face jail terms of up to 14 years.
