PA government resigns Abbas asks Haneyya to form the new government

GAZA (PIC)– Ismail Haneyya has submitted the resignation of his government to President Abbas on Thursday evening and Abbas asked Haneyya to form the next government according the agreement reached between Hamas and Fatah in Makkah last week.

The letter of assignment stated: “I call on you to form a national unity government in accordance with the [PA] basic law and call you as the head of the future government to adhere to the higher interests of the Palestinian nation and to preserve its achievements as approved by consecutive national councils and Arab summits and respect agreements reached by the PLO.”

Hamas and Fatah signed last week an agreement in Makkah which aimed to stop the internal strife and consolidate Palestinian unity to achieve Palestinian national goals.

It was also agreed to form a national unity government and to reform the PLO according to previous agreements in Egypt and Syria.

A meeting between Hamas and Fatah took place on Thursday afternoon in Gaza to iron out last minute issues the meeting culminated with the meeting between Abbas and Haneyya and the consequent constitutional process for forming a new government.
