PA government wants Abbas rethink meeting with Olmert after ministers jailed

Tuesday 5-June-2007

GAZA (PIC)– The PA unity government has urged PA chief Mahmoud Abbas to rethink his scheduled meeting with Israeli premier Ehud Olmert after IOA placed two Palestinian ministers and a lawmaker under administrative detention Monday.

The government said that Abbas must take decisive stands towards those unwarranted Israeli measures against the Palestinian people particularly the elected lawmakers and PA ministers.

For his part Hamas’ lawmaker Dr. Yahya Mousa affirmed that his Movement attaches no hope on the meeting or any future meeting between Abbas and Olmert describing those meetings as focusing on security agenda only which is a “fatal mistake” he said.

He explained that meetings with the Israeli occupation side must be based on political foundations and based on Israel’s readiness to recognize legal rights of the Palestinian people.

“We shouldn’t remain navigating in endless political mazes at the expense of the Palestinian people’s legal rights” Mousa underlined.

Commander of the IOF central command ordered PA education minister Dr. Nasser Al-Dein Al-Shaer PA state minister Wasfi Kabaha and MP Abdul Rahman Zaidan be placed under six-month administrative detention in the Jalama prison.

The decision was condemned by human rights and legal institutions in the Palestinian arena.

Ghazi Hamad the spokesman of the PA unity government described the decision as “arbitrary and oppressive” that aims at derailing the Palestinian political system and falls in the framework of Israel’s comprehensive aggression on the Palestinian people.

In this context he urged the international community to immediately step in and pressure the IOA into releasing tens of kidnapped PA lawmakers and ministers.
