Palestinian Authority’s (PA) security forces on Saturday used tear gas and batons to quell a demonstration organized by al-Tahreer Party in al-Khalil city in protest at giving the ownership of an Islamic Waqf land to the Russian Orthodox Church.
The PA forces arrested a large number of participants in the demonstration after charging them with igniting riots.
Member of al-Tahreer Party’s media office Maher al-Jaabari told a press conference later on Saturday that the PA’s decision is legally null and void according to law and Islamic Sharia.
He pointed out that the church’s area is estimated at 73 acres of land and it’s a Waqf land to the noble Sahabi Tamim Ad-Dari and owned by Muslims throughout history to the end of time.
