PFLP opts not to join unity government

Tuesday 20-February-2007

GAZA (PIC)– The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) on Tuesday said it would not participate in the national unity government to be headed by Ismail Haneyya for political reasons.

Dr. Mariam Abu Dakka the PFLP politburo member said that the political bureau decided against participation in the government due to the wording of the letter of assignment sent by PA chief Mahmoud Abbas to Haneyya.

Abu Dakkah told Quds Press that the PFLP whose leader Ahmed Saadat is held in Israeli jails rejected content of that letter because it was less than Palestinian unanimity and included “respect of agreements between the PLO and the Zionist entity”.

She explained that the PFLP welcomed the Makkah agreement because it basically ended the infighting between Hamas and Fatah movements but said that the agreement did not live up to the basic political needs.

The Islamic Jihad Movement had also said it would not participate in the government but would continue to back it in a bid to unite the Palestinian people.

Meanwhile a number of PLC members who are held in Israeli occupation jails addressed a message to all Palestinian factions especially those not taking part in the Makkah agreement to join that accord.

Sheikh Hassan Yousef a Hamas MP said that all other factions should join the two big movements in a bid to help stabilize the government.

Yasser Mansour another Hamas MP said that representation of parliamentary blocs in the government should be in accordance with the weight of each.
