Palestinian-Israeli ceasefire goes into effect

Sunday 26-November-2006

Gaza- All Palestinian armed wings operating in the Gaza Strip announced at a late hour Saturday an agreement to cease firing home made rockets at Israeli targets as of 6 am (local time) Sunday on condition that the IOF troops would reciprocate the ceasefire.

The announcement followed a meeting between PA premier Ismail Haneyya and leaders and representatives of various armed wings other than the five political factions that had on Friday agreed to the calm during a similar meeting with Haneyya.

Khaled Abu Hilal the PA interior ministry spokesman told a press conference that Palestinians were unanimous on abiding by the calm and would monitor the extent of Israel’s commitment to the ceasefire.

He noted that Haneyya had met with Hamas Fatah Jihad PFLP and DFLP leaders on Friday then held a similar meeting with armed wings not affiliated with the five political factions on Saturday evening where all affirmed commitment to the ceasefire which he said should be “reciprocal and balanced”.

For his part Abu Abir the spokesman of the popular resistance committees (PRC) said that a ceasefire agreement was reached and “we will follow up the occupation’s commitment to it”.

He added that the situation would be evaluated with the premier in the few coming days noting that the PRC would join the higher follow up committee of Palestinian forces.
