Palestinian MP rejects Abbas’s call for international troops deployment

Tuesday 3-July-2007

GAZA (PIC)– MP Hussam Al-Tawil an independent Christian member of the PLC has declared his rejection of PA chief Mahmoud Abbas’s call for sending international troops to the Gaza Strip to monitor early general elections.

In a press release on Monday Tawil said that those forces would only deepen the rift in Palestinian lines and would only serve “under present circumstances” as mandatory forces.

The idea of deploying international forces is rejected in principle at present but under different circumstances “we would have welcomed them to protect the Palestinian people from Israeli occupation’s crimes” he elaborated.

The lawmaker championed dialogue among Palestinians in order to settle all pending problems with the help of Arab brothers. He said that all parties should stick to the Makkah agreement or to agree on developing it to serve as a wider partnership accord under the umbrella of the Arab League.

The MP furthermore objected to the international quartet committee’s appointment of former British premier Tony Blair as its envoy explaining that he did not enjoy the minimum requirements of a mediator mainly being neutral. He said that Blair was biased in favor of the Hebrew state.
