Palestinian academics call on UK to apologize compensate Palestinians

Sunday 4-November-2007

GAZA (PIC)– Palestinian politicians and academics called on the British government to make a formal apology to the Palestinian people in addition to compensations because it allowed itself to put the foundation stone of the Israeli occupation.

During a cultural forum on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the infamous Balfour Declaration Palestinian academic Ramadan Azayan confirmed on Saturday that the Balfour promise would not change the fact that Palestine is only for the Palestinian people.

For his part Tayseer Nashwan the vice-president of the Aqsa University for Cultural Affairs underlined that the Balfour Declaration is illegal because it was issued by a country which does not have the right to give up the rights of other people to those who do not deserve.

Nashwan added: “This promise came to reflect the British interests then represented in finding a solution to the problem of Jews in Europe strengthening the division in the Arab world and protecting the interests of western countries.”

For his part Nahid Al-Rayes the former PA justice minister underscored: “We must not absolve Britain from what it committed for it is the main cause of Palestine’s plight and it has to give the Palestinian people compensations and formally apologize to them.”
