Palestinian detainees in Huwara jail start hunger strike

Wednesday 5-August-2020

All Palestinian detainees held at Israel’s Huwara jail have started an open hunger strike over the maltreatment and deliberate neglect they are subjected to by the Israel Prison Service.

The Palestinian Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission said that the hunger strikers are protesting bad food and drinking water lack of hygiene supplies deliberate medical neglect and the short break they are allowed to spend in the prison yard.

The commission said that the 30 detainees who are taking part in the strike have threatened to stop drinking water in the coming days if the Israel Prison Service does not respond to their demands and improve their detention conditions.

They called on the International Committee of the Red Cross and all concerned legal and human rights organizations to intervene to put an end to the Israel Prison Service’s aggressive policies.

About 4700 Palestinian prisoners are currently held in Israeli lock-ups including 41 female prisoners 160 children and 365 administrative detainees who are imprisoned without charge or trial.
