Palestinian refugees face multiple hardships in Syria

Tuesday 27-December-2022

As the years pass by Palestinians of Syria who suffer from harsh circumstances renew hope of returning to their homes in Palestine.

The spokesman for Action Group for Palestinians of Syria (AGPS) Fayiz Abu Eid told the PIC that Palestinians of Syria live in fear and uncertainty due to their dubious legal status and the deteriorating economic conditions in addition to the unprecedented rise of poverty rates among the Palestinian refugees.

He affirmed that thousands of Palestinians of Syria suffer from the repercussions of decreasing the UNRWA supplies that don’t meet their basic needs noting that 95% of Palestinians of Syria depend totally on cash assistance provided by UNRWA.

The number of Palestinian refugees who migrated from Syria mostly youths has increased spokesman Abu Eid said pointing out that 200000 Palestinian refugees migrated from Syria in 2022.

“More than 2000 Palestinian and Syrian families returned to the Yarmouk refugee camp after a resolution was issued in September 2021 to facilitate the unconditional return of the camp’s residents” Abu Eid underlined adding that the number of families receiving the required security clearance is still very low compared to the camp’s large population.

According to the AGPS 4147 Palestinian refugees in Syria including 493 women and 252 children have been martyred since Syria civil war erupted in 2012. The group also reported that 3076 Palestinians including 110 women and 49 children have been held in detention by the Syrian regime. It added that 333 others including 40 women went missing.

For their part Palestinian activists condemned the inaction of the Palestinian Authority towards the tragedy of the Palestinians in the refugee camps in Syria calling on the PA to assume its responsibility and work towards improving the conditions of the lives of Palestinian refugees in Syria.
