Palestinian striking prisoner in “tragic condition”

Thursday 16-December-2021

The Palestinian prisoner Hisham Abu Hawash is in tragic health situation as he continues hunger strike for more than four months rights sources revealed on Thursday.

The Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Authority said that Abu Hawwash who has been on a hunger strike for 122 consecutive days in protest at his detention without charge or trial is in “a tragic condition.”

Abu Hawash started suffering weakness in the bones and muscles a sharp weight loss and sharp pains all over his body. He became unable to move or to speak.

However Israeli courts continue to refuse his release appeals.

Earlier this week an Israeli court had rejected the appeal submitted for Abu Hawash’s release despite his difficult health condition.

Abu Hawash’s family has warned that its son may die at any moment as a result of his prolonged hunger strike calling for urgent action to save his life before it is too late.

At least four of five other hunger strikers have recently ended their protests after reaching deals with Israeli authorities. They are expected to be released in the coming months.

Hunger strikes have been common among Palestinian prisoners and have helped secure several concessions from Israeli authorities.

The nature of these strikes have varied from individuals protesting detention without charge to groups calling for improved imprisonment conditions.

Around 500 of the 4600 Palestinians detained by Israel are held in administrative detention according to Addameer a Palestinian prisoner rights group.
