Palestinians of Chile to stage day to preserve national identity

Palestinian groups in Chile intend to organize a Palestinian day in the country every year to preserve the Palestinian identity and strengthen the sense of belonging to the homeland.

This day which will kick off on January 7 will include several social cultural and artistic events and activities aimed primarily at making the Palestinians living in Chile more attached to their national cause and involved in serving it in international conferences and events.

In addition to that there will be exhibitions during this day on Jerusalem the Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe) and Israel’s separation wall in the West Bank.

During this day Rowan al-Dhamen a noted Palestinian media figure will display a remix video project and a group of its Spanish-translated films on Palestine according to Quds Press.

For its part head of the Palestinian Federation in Chile Nadia Gharib stated that there would be folkloric activities and traditional meals from the Palestinian cuisine.

Gharib added that Palestinians from different areas of Chile would help to serve the purpose of holding this day which is “to deepen the sense of belonging to Palestine and make use of the role that the Palestinians of Chile can play to serve the national cause.”

Executive director of the federation Anwar Makhlouf also told Quds Press that the Palestinian day in Chile would help pool the Palestinian efforts to serve the national cause in all countries of South America.

Makhlouf added that noted Palestinian figures and activists in South America would participate in workshops to coordinate their work for Palestine.

The Palestinians’ presence in Chile dates back to the 1850s and they number according to statistics between 350000 and 500000 people.

Although many Palestinians in the country are influential businessmen their political role in advocating the Palestinian cause are very limited.

The Palestinians there are also highly educated and many of them managed to hold ministerial and parliamentary posts.
