Paraguay to open its embassy in Jerusalem next Monday

Saturday 19-May-2018

Spokesman for Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Emmanuel Nahshon on Saturday announced that Paraguay will open its embassy in Jerusalem next Monday days after the US celebrated the transfer of its embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.

Nahshon wrote on Twitter that the president of Paraguay Horacio Cartes will arrive in Israel Sunday evening for the opening of Paraguay’s embassy in Jerusalem on Monday describing the move as a “historical moment”.

Paraguayan Foreign Minister Eladio Loizaga during an interview with Radio 970 AM Friday said that the decision was made by the president independently and without being influenced by any other country.

Paraguay is the second Latin American country after Guatemala that follows the lead of the US and decides to move its embassy to Jerusalem.

US president Donald Trump in December 2017 recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced his plan to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. On 14th May 2018 the US opened its embassy in the holy city.
