The Egyptian authorities on Tuesday evening opened the Rafah border crossing in one direction for the return of stranded Palestinian passengers to Gaza.
Local sources said that the crossing was opened for a few hours after passengers seeking to enter Gaza crowded in large numbers on the Egyptian side of the border.
Scores of Palestinian passengers on Tuesday afternoon were forced to go back to Gaza following an Egyptian decision not to extend the opening of the crossing for more days.
The Egyptian authorities had pledged to open the crossing for another three days but later they backtracked on this decision.
