Political prisoner subjected to torture at PA jails

Head of Student Council at Birzeit University Omar al-Kiswani affirmed that his colleague Usama Mafarjeh who is held captive at the Palestinian Authority (PA) intelligence apparatus in Ramallah for 5 days is being subjected to torture and ill-treatment.

He was tortured by fixing him to a chair for long hours regardless of being on hunger strike since he was arrested in protest at his illegal political detention Kiswani elaborated.

In a statement on Friday Kiswani said that Mafarjeh was arrested based on his university activities and serving students as the coordinator of the Islamic bloc the student wing of Hamas Movement.

He asked the university administration to immediately intervene to save the life of detainee Mafarjeh and to bear responsibility for its students. Kiswani also called on human rights organizations along with key national figures to exert efforts for releasing captive Mafarjeh and arranging an urgent visit in order to check on him.

Kiswani demanded the PA to halt all torture methods practiced by its security forces against university students in the West Bank.
