Friday 18-May-2007

Gaza (PIC)– Guards of the Islamic University in Gaza have reported that the PA Presidential Guards and other security elements stationed on rooftops of buildings around the university have frequently opened intensive machine gun fire and fired RPG’s at the university.

The guards told PIC correspondent in Gaza that the firing has set one of the buildings on fire and that the firing targeted the university administration building. Firefighters tried to reach the fire but they could not because of the intensity of machine gun fire.

The guards also reported that Presidential Guards are gathering in the area and that they have mounted the roof top of the nearby ministry of housing.

The Qassam Brigades for their part have warned they will fiercely defend the university.

Journalists threatened with liquidation if they cover the assault on the university

In a serious turn of events Palestinian security elements contacted journalists warning them against covering events in the vicinity of the university telling them that any journalist who dares to do that will meet the same fate as other journalists in reference to the three journalists executed by the PA security.

Ali al-Qaisi spokesman for the Presidential guards denied the reports of the siege or the attack and said that the presidential guards are ready to defend the university on orders from President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Presidential Guards have previously attacked and ransacked the university causing millions of dollars of damage.
