A series of protest moves has swept the occupied Palestinian territories in solidarity with some 1500 Palestinian hunger strikers in Israeli jails.
Nearly 1500 Palestinian detainees have been on a hunger strike for the seventh day running in protest at the arbitrary detention and mistreatment they have been enduring in Israeli jails.
The Israeli prison authorities have cracked down on the detainees in an attempt to force them to suspend the hunger strike. Arbitrary searches have been carried out by Israeli suppressive units into Palestinian prison wards using sniffer dogs.
The Israeli prison service further subjected the detainees to arbitrary visit-bans and solitary confinement as part of its retaliatory measures.
A number of detainees in Ramon jail also joined the hunger strike on Saturday.
The Palestinian Prisoners Society filed a complaint to the concerned Israeli prison authorities in protest at the visit bans issued against the lawyers.
A series of solidarity moves has meanwhile been staged nationwide and overseas in support for the detainees.
The National Committee to Support the Detainees announced Sunday April 23 a day of national anger. A series of marches are expected to kick off at 11:00 a.m.
Solidarity events have also been held in Algeria Lebanon Italy and France among other Arab and European states in solidarity with the hunger strikers.
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has also expressed its solidarity with the Palestinian prisoners who have gone on hunger strike in Israeli prisons.
NAM which comprises 120 member states that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc expressed solidarity with the peaceful and nonviolent act called the Freedom and Dignity strike which has been staged to protest the inhumane treatment by the Israeli occupation.
