Qatar has asked the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to create a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East and compel Israel to implement relevant international resolutions and join the non-proliferation treaty (NPT).
Ali bin Jasim Al Thani Qatar’s ambassador to Austria and permanent representative to the UN and international organizations in Vienna made the remarks on Thursday as he addressed the annual conference of the IAEA which is still underway.
Bin Jasim affirmed that the peoples of the Middle East feel the threat of nuclear weapons more than others and called for making progress on nuclear disarmament in the region.
He expressed regret over not implementing the decision of the 1995 review and extension conference of the parties to the NPT 25 years later urging the IAEA to overcome the obstacles that prevent creating a nuclear-free zone.
As for the peaceful uses of nuclear power the Qatari ambassador said his country sees them as a major stimulator for achieving development bringing people together and building a safer society.
He also said that Qatar pays special attention to developing its institutions that are concerned with the peaceful implementations of nuclear power especially in the fields of foodstuffs agriculture human health and environment.
