Rafah crossing opens in both directions for two days

Saturday 18-April-2009

GAZA (PIC)– The general administration of crossings and borders announced that the Rafah border crossing would be open in both directions before Palestinian citizens for two consecutive days as of Saturday morning at nine o’clock.

In a press statement received by the PIC spokesman for the administration Adel Zu’rub said that the administration is fully ready to oversee and facilitate the travel of citizens on the Palestinian side of the crossing.

Zu’rub warned of the consequences of the unjustified policy of delaying passengers which augments their suffering and leads to overcrowding.

The spokesman called on all international and local human rights institutions to expose Israel’s anti-democratic and anti-human rights policy especially with regard to its closure of crossings and the pressures it makes to retain the Rafah crossing closed pointing out that the closure of Rafah crossing and opening it on an exceptional basis is a flagrant violation of the universal declaration of human rights.

In the same context it has been reported that the Egyptian authorities opened the Rafah crossing at 11 o’clock in the morning where only five buses out of 80 buses supposed to be allowed in according to an agreement with the Egyptian side were allowed to cross into Egypt

Signs of dissatisfaction were expressed by the Palestinian side and passengers at Egypt’s foot-dragging performance at the crossing.

The Palestinian side had closed last time the Rafah crossing because of the policy of long-waiting and piling up Palestinian travelers pursued by Egypt at the crossing.
