Rally outside UNRWA office in Gaza over arbitrary staff dismissal

Tuesday 21-February-2017

Representatives of Palestinian national factions rallied outside the UNRWA headquarters in the blockaded Gaza Strip in protest at the lay-off of Palestinian staff members.

The rally staged in al-Nuseirat Camp condemned the arbitrary decisions opted for by UNRWA on groundless claims.

Last month a Palestinian instructor was fired by UNRWA on claims of acting violently with a learner after the agency secretly interrogated schoolchildren.

Ata Dergham coordinator for the youth initiative in al-Bureij Camp said such dismissals by UNRWA are signs of “a dangerous and unacceptable policy” pursued by the agency.

Hamas representative Jamal al-Hindi slammed the agency for “using a behind-closed-door policy to find pretexts for kicking out unwanted personnel.”

Spokesman for the popular resistance committees Abu Hassan al-Shishaniya also said: “A teacher at school is the learner’s second father. Gaza instructors have done their best to teach the younger generation despite the dire conditions they have been made to endure.”

“A teacher is someone whom we should pay homage to for he/she contributes to the education of a generation that will build the future of our nation and resist the occupation with knowledge and power” he said. “UNRWA should cease its policy of debasement against its teaching staff.”
