Ramon jailers take Sheikh Salah from isolation cell to jail infirmary

Thursday 23-September-2021

Sheikh Ra’ed Salah head of the Islamic Movement in 1948 occupied Palestine (Israel) at dawn Thursday was taken to the infirmary of the Ramon jail where he has been held in solitary confinement in a small cell for over a year.

His lawyer Khaled Zabarqa told the Palestinian Information Center (PIC) that Sheikh Salah was provided with an intravenous saline fluid after he complained of a severe headache and then escorted back to his isolation cell.

Sheikh Salah is facing difficult health and incarceration conditions due to the inhumane nature of solitary confinement he has been in since August 16 2020.

Zabarqa stressed the need to end the isolation of Sheikh Salah and let him be in a general prison section where he would receive attention from other Palestinian prisoners in case of emergency.

He affirmed that the Sheikh had health problems before his detention but his exposure to solitary confinement in a cell unsuitable for human life doubled his suffering.

The lawyer held the Israeli prison service fully responsible for any deterioration in Sheikh Salah’s health resulting from its persistence in isolating him pointing out that he was waiting for permission to visit the Sheikh after he submitted a request in this regard.

Sheikh Salah was detained by Israeli forces in August 2017 and indicted for incitement following his criticism of the installment of metal detectors at the entrances to the Aqsa Mosque in Occupied Jerusalem.

He was sentenced to 28 months in prison by an Israeli court. He served 11 months half of which in solitary confinement before he was placed under house arrest.

After two years of home detention in August 2020 Salah started a 17-month prison term on incitement charges.
