Renewed calls for confronting Israeli wine festival in Mosque

Saturday 18-June-2022

Calls were renewed on Saturday to challenge the Israeli decision to organize a wine festival in the Mosque of Beersheba.

The Israeli municipality and groups of Jewish settlers decided to hold a wine festival in the Mosque of Beersheba each Monday in June and July 2022.

In 2012 Palestinian worshippers in the Negev performed the Friday prayer for the first time since Nakba as the prayer in the Mosque of Beersheba had been banned. Despite the Israeli military checkpoints and arrests worshippers managed to protect the holy site from the disgrace of the wine festival.

The Israeli municipality had also announced its decision to transform the mosque into a museum.

Israel uses the absentees’ property law as an instrument to take possession of holy sites houses and historic places of 1948 Occupied Palestine preventing Palestinians from reaching such places.
