Report: 19 journalists in Israeli jails

Tuesday 1-January-2019

19 Palestinian journalists had been in Israeli jails by the end of 2018 according to a Palestinian official report.

In the report the Palestinian ministry of information said that the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) had committed several violations against journalists in 2018 such as extending their administrative detention with no trial or indictment and giving them harsh prison terms.

Some of the Palestinian journalists were placed under house arrest and forced to pay exorbitant financial penalties by Israeli courts and some others who suffer from either injuries or health problems were medically neglected by jailers.

The ministry affirmed that the exposure of journalists to detention and punitive measures by the IOA were part of the mouth muzzling policy pursued by Israel against the Palestinian media.

It also accused Israel of having no regard for international resolutions that protect the freedom of the press.
