Russia announced on Thursday its intention to invite the Palestinian factions to meet soon in Moscow in order to strengthen the path of reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas movements.
The planned invitation was announced in a phone call made by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov with the Deputy Secretary-General of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine Qais Abdul Karim Abu Laila according to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA.
Bogdanov Special Representative of the Russian President in the Middle East and North Africa said that his country would soon send official invitations to all Palestinian factions to meet in Moscow “in order to strengthen the process of reconciliation and national unity.”
The two sides discussed ongoing efforts to strengthen Palestinian national unity and Russia’s role in this regard.
For his part the Secretary-General of the People’s Party Bassam al-Salhi said that no invitations have yet been sent to the factions and no date has been set for the meeting although the idea was tabled.
In an interview with the Turkish Anadolu News Agency he pointed to “obstacles under the conditions and procedures resulting from the spread of Coronavirus and the difficulty of movement.”
In February 2019 12 Palestinian factions met in Moscow during which they stressed the need to confront the US peace plan known as the “Deal of the Century” and bringing the division to an end.
