Russia to seek an end to the siege imposed on the Palestinians

Tuesday 27-February-2007

MOSCOW (PIC)– Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday affirmed that his country would continue supporting the Palestinian people and would seek an end to the international siege imposed on the Palestinians over a year ago.

Lavrov at the start of talks with Khaled Mishaal the chairman of the Hamas Movement and his accompanying delegates said that signatories of the Makkah agreement had showed great wisdom.

“We strongly support such a step (Makkah agreement) and will seek the world community’s support for it” he underlined.

The Russian chief diplomat praised the results of the Makkah meeting between Hamas and Fatah movements saying that it was particularly important because it opened the way before resuming the Middle East peace process.

Russia has backed the idea of a Palestinian unity government ever since it was tabled in May 2006 and will continue to support the practical steps that were taken towards that end until final success of the idea Lavrov emphasized.

Mishaal arrived in Moscow at the head of a senior Hamas delegation on Monday and immediately started meeting a number of officials.

The Hamas top leader met Alexander Sultanov the Russian deputy foreign minister on Monday in his second visit to Russia within a year.

Mishaal stressed on arrival to Moscow that the world community should respect the Palestinian harmony and should not burden the Palestinians with conditions which should rather be imposed on Israel in its capacity as an occupying power.
