Director of UNRWA operations in Gaza Matthias Schmale has warned that the agency may not be able to pay salaries to its employees for the current month if its budget deficit continues.
During his meeting on Monday with senior PLO official Zakaria al-Agha Schmale said that the UNRWA in Gaza suffers from a financial deficit amounting to 60 million dollars.
He affirmed that the agency was able to pay November salaries to its employees despite this deficit after some funds were channeled to it through banks at the last moment.
He also said that since last month the UNRWA received only half a million dollars from the Republic of Ireland which was insufficient to cover the financial deficit.
“UNRWA needs 40 million dollars to pay staff salaries for the current month and continue to provide services for refugees” he added.
