Pro-Palestine activists intend on Tuesday to launch a multilingual social media campaign to demand the release of Palestinian female prisoner Israa Ja’abis who suffers from serious burns.
The campaign is aimed to shed light on the suffering of prisoner Ja’abis and pressure for her release in order for her to receive proper medical treatment outside.
“Freeisraa” and “helpisraa” are two of the hashtags used to express solidarity with Ja’abis.
Palestinian prisoner Israa Jaabis 32 was sentenced to 11 years in prison last November 2017 by an Israeli court in Occupied Jerusalem.
Jaabis who is a resident of Jabal Mukabber in east Jerusalem was severely injured on October 10 2015 after a fire accidently broke out in her car. She was 500 meters away from an Israeli military checkpoint when a gas cylinder used in cooking burst into flames in the back seat of her car.
Jaabis’ airbag went off in the front seat of the car. The Israeli authorities exploited the incident and accused her of attempting to detonate a car bomb especially since an Israeli police officer was injured when the car fire broke out.
However Jaabis was severely burned especially on her face and hands. Eight of her fingers were amputated when she was hospitalized. She and her family repeatedly stated that she was carrying the gas cylinder to a new home she just moved in.
In order to preserve her Jerusalem residency she had recently rented a new apartment and had been moving furniture in her car for days. Palestinian Jerusalemites especially those with family members in the West Bank are systematically targeted for the revocation of their Jerusalem IDs by the Israeli occupation.
Jaabis was transferred to Hasharon prison before the completion of her treatment. Due to her severe injuries and lack of support inside the prison she must rely on her fellow women prisoners to assist her with basic tasks. She is not receiving supplemental treatment despite her massive burns and severe injuries.
The Israeli prison service are deliberately leaving her to live with unbearable pain while spending her 11-year-sentence in prison.
