Saturday 28-April-2007

GAZA (PIC)– PA information minister Dr. Mustafa Al-Barghouthi has described his visit to Spain and the meeting with Spanish foreign minister Miguel Moratinos as “important and positive” and tackled the suffering of the Palestinian people.

Barghouthi’s visit to Spain is considered the first time Spain receives a minister from the PA unity government of premier Ismail Haneyya.

According to Barghouthi the discussion with Moratinos focused on the wing-clipping US-led economic blockade on the Palestinian people and Israel’s seizure of PA tax revenue money which is close to 1 billion dollars.

Barghouthi furthermore revealed that he briefed the Spaniards on the political program of the PA unity government as well as the initiatives it has taken regarding the prisoners’ swap deal and the truce which according to Barghouthi were reciprocated with more Israeli military escalation against the Palestinian people.

Yet both sides highlighted the necessity of ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian lands establishing an independent and viable Palestinian state and carrying out UN resolutions regarding the Palestinian question.

In addition Barghouthi urged the international community to immediately deal with the PA unity government and to resume financial support to the Palestinian people warning that international failure to halt the sanctions could fuel tension and jeopardize peace and stability in the region.

He also pointed out that the PA unity government represents 96% of the Palestinian people and therefore it is about time for the international community to take this fact into consideration and normalize ties with it describing rapport between the Palestinian and the Spanish people as “constructive historical and distinguished”.

For his part Moratinos affirmed he agrees with Barghouthi on the importance of ending the economic blockade on the Palestinian people that he noted jeopardized health and education systems in the Palestinian community.

The Spanish minister furthermore affirmed that he discussed the Palestinian question with his European counterparts during their meeting in Oslo and that they agreed to take further positive steps in dealing with the PA unity government and to give it a chance to succeed.
