On the occasion of the Palestinian Prisoner’s Day statistics indicate that there are 4500 Palestinians held in 23 Israeli prisons and investigation centers under difficult incarceration conditions.
According to statistics published by prisoners’ institutions 41 of the prisoners are females most of them are in Damon prison in addition to 140 children and minors held in the prisons of Ofer Megiddo and Damon.
The number of prisoners arrested by the Israeli occupation before the Oslo agreement and still held in its prisons reached 25 the oldest of whom have been detained since 1983.
Among the prisoners 543 are sentenced to life imprisonment with the highest verdict being accorded to Abdullah Al-Barghouti with 67 life sentences.
Some 440 prisoners are held in administrative detention without trial or charge based on the so-called “secret file” that the “Shin Bet” intelligence agency presents to the court and neither the detainee nor his lawyer are allowed to have access to these files.
The administrative detention order can be renewed more than once and its duration ranges from two to six months and it can be extended.
About 550 prisoners suffer from various degrees of diseases and they need medical follow-up and at least 10 prisoners have cancer.
According to the statistics 75 of the prisoners were martyred as a result of the policy of slow death 73 as a result of torture 71 others due to medical negligence and 7 after being shot.
During the past year four prisoners have been martyred in prisons due to medical negligence and torture.
