The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People will hold a conference on 29th and 30th June at its headquarters in New York to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Tuesday that international experts from Israel and Palestine delegates from UN member states representatives of human rights organizations and journalists will participate in the conference.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs launched a special project that included opening a website entitled “50 years of Israeli occupation”. The website published 50 stories of Palestinians living under occupation.
On 5th June 1967 Israel waged a six-day war on Egypt Jordan and Syria and was able to occupy the Sinai Peninsula the Gaza Strip the West Bank including Jerusalem and the Syrian Golan Heights.
About 20000 Arabs and 800 Israelis were killed in the war and 70-80% of the Arab military equipment was destroyed while 2-5% of the Israeli equipment was affected according to Israeli statistics.
Based on Palestinian statistics the 1967 war (Naksa) resulted in wiping out entire Palestinian villages displacing about 300000 Palestinians from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip most of whom fled to Jordan and opening the door for Jewish settlement in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Israel in later years annexed Jerusalem and the Golan and continues to colonize the West Bank and besieges the Gaza Strip by land sea and air.
The UN Security Council issued resolution No. 242 in November 1967 which asked Israel to withdraw from the territories it occupied in June 1967 but it was not implemented.
