UN reasserts its rejection of Israeli settler plans in J’lem

Tuesday 3-August-2021

The United Nations (UN) has reiterated its rejection of Israeli intents to displace Palestinian citizens from their homes in the occupied territories.

In a press briefing on Monday spokesman for the UN secretary general Stephane Dujarric stressed that all Israeli settlement activities including evictions and demolitions are illegal under international law.

The spokesman made his remarks in response to a question about the secretary general’s position on the Israeli court session that was held on the same day for Sheikh Jarrah families who are facing an Israeli plan to evict them from their homes.

Dujarric affirmed that the UN was following closely the issue of Sheikh Jarrah families and would wait until a final court ruling was issued later in the coming days.

The Israeli higher court in Occupied Jerusalem on Monday adjourned an appeal from four Palestinian families (composed of 70 people) against their forced expulsion from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and gave them seven days to consider a compromise proposal for their issue.

However the families said they would not accept the court proposal that ask them to stay in their homes as protected tenants and recognize Israeli ownership.

Lower Israeli courts have already approved the expulsion of these four families to make way for Jewish settlers. They okayed Israeli claims that Palestinian houses were built on lands owned by Jews before Israel was established in 1948.
