UN slammed for not punishing Israel for war crimes

Friday 7-July-2017

The Euro-Mediterranean Observatory for Human Rights criticized on Friday the UN’s failure to impose sanctions on Israel three years after its last military aggression against the Gaza Strip in 2014.

The Observatory said in a statement that the investigations conducted by the UN Commission of Inquiry into the aggression have not yielded any results until today nor were followed by actual international steps to hold Israel accountable for its crimes which opens the door for more violations against the Palestinians.

According to UN statistics the Israeli occupation forces launched on 8th July 2014 a 51-day large-scale military assault on the Gaza Strip that led to killing 2251 Palestinians 551 of whom were children and injuring 11000 others Quds Press reported.

The UN Fact-Finding Mission had convicted Israel for grave and deliberate war crimes committed in the Gaza Strip based on the testimonies it gathered. The Israeli occupation forces were accused of intentionally targeting civilians within a plan approved by the military command. However none of the Israeli commanders has been prosecuted to date.

The Geneva-based Observatory called on the international community to work to activate the results of the UN investigations and prosecute Israel at the International Criminal Court for the crimes committed in the summer of 2014.
