UNRWA employees on strike in Gaza O.J. W.B.

UNRWA Employees Union declared a general strike on Monday in the organization’s main offices in Gaza Strip the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem.

Head of the union Suheil al-Hindi said that the strike came in protest against the agency’s refusal to meet the employees’ demands.

The “biggest protest” would take place on Tuesday as local employees in all UNRWA’s offices would go on strike including schools he underlined pointing out that all UNRWA’s employees in the northern Gaza Strip would take to the streets on Tuesday.

More escalatory steps would be taken over the next few days according to his statements.

The Employees Union has previously accused the UNRWA administration of manipulating over Palestinian refugees’ rights in order to win some time and save money at the expense of refugees.

The union has also asked UNRWA to increase the employees’ salaries to cope with the high cost of living and to stop reducing services the organization offers to Palestinian refugees.

More protests would follow if the demands of the union were not met the union warned.
