Violent clashes reported in Silwan town

Wednesday 17-November-2021

Violent clashes erupted late Tuesday evening in Silwan town in Occupied Jerusalem after Israeli police forces stormed the area amid heavy firing of teargas and sound bombs.

The Israeli police closed earlier Tuesday Ein Al-Lawza Street in Silwan town restricting the locals’ movement.

Commercial shops were also stormed in the Ras Al-Amoud neighborhood in Silwan town more than once since the morning hours.

Roads in Silwan town are regularly blocked by Israeli police as cars are searched and drivers held while their licenses and other credentials are checked in what residents say is a policy of collective punishment to “show them who is boss in the area”.

Palestinian homes are threatened with demolition on an almost daily basis in Occupied Jerusalem.

Since 2005 residents of the al-Bustan area of Silwan have received demolition notices of more than 100 homes for building without permit in favor of an Israeli settler organization that seeks to turn the land into a national park.

According to Grassroots Jerusalem a Palestinian NGO both home demolitions and court-ordered forced displacements are tactics used to expel Palestinian residents from the holy city.
