Head of the Popular International Committee to Support Gaza Esam Yousuf on Friday warned of the repercussions of UNRWA’s decision to cut its services to Palestinian refugees.
Yousuf said in a press statement that the impact of UNRWA’s decision to reduce services has begun to clearly appear in key sectors of the lives of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon Jordan Syria the Gaza Strip and the West Bank particularly in the health and education sectors.
He added that Palestinian refugees in Lebanon are deeply concerned about their future in view of the latest UNRWA measures including forcing some teachers into early retirement dismissing others and closing some schools or reducing the amount of fuel supplied to them.
He stressed that the situation in the health sector is no less serious calling on the international community to urgently act against the reduction of services provided to refugees which are already barely sufficient to meet their most basic needs.
Yousuf affirmed that the catastrophic consequences of the UNRWA cuts will not be limited to the communities where refugees live but will also include the bigger communities hosting them.
He renewed his call on donor countries to compensate for the lack of US aid to UNRWA warning of the humanitarian and political repercussions of the US president Donald Trump’s decision to freeze funds to the UN Agency on both the short and long terms.
