Palestinian refugees struggle in ruined camp

Saturday 4-February-2023

90 houses in the Al-Buss Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon are in urgent need for restoration as they are considered dilapidated and unfit for human occupancy revealed a source in UNRWA Department of Planning.

The source pointed out that the houses were listed as uninhabitable housing units since 2018. But no action was taken since then.

The refugee camp has witnessed many cases of roof collapse especially during winter due to the climate and time impacts.

According to the source 98 houses in Beirut’s Shatila refugee camp are also threatened with collapse.

A local activist affirmed that the roof collapse of the Nabulsi family’s house was the latest incident in the camp.

Fortunately no one was hurt as the family members were all outside.

The family appealed for UNRWA and all decision-makers to restore the house before it is too late.

Meanwhile the Lebanese authorities continue to prevent the entry of building materials into official camps in the south of Lebanon based on a decree issued on 1 January 1997.

In 2001 Lebanon issued property law (Decree 296) prohibiting Palestinians from the ownership of property and deprives them of the right to transfer their already purchased apartments and deeds to their children.

Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon are unprepared for winter due to the disgraceful housing conditions amid growing appeals for early restoration activities.
