Campaign to restore life in Yarmouk refugee camp

A popular campaign was launched in the Yarmouk camp for Palestinian refugees south of the Syrian capital Damascus aimed to restore life in the camp after years of suffering and displacement.

Damascus Governor Muhammad Kreishati visited the camp accompanied by a number of officials and promised to activate a number of vital services in the camp.

The visit came as part of a joint initiative launched under the title “Hand in Hand” aimed to “clean the largest number of streets and buildings and remove the rubble” the Damascus Governor clarified.

“We already started working to provide water and sanitation services in the main streets in the refugee camp” he added.

Electricity services he continued will be activated to reach 1800 families living in the camp.

A bakery a commercial center and a mosque will be opened in the few coming days.

The lawyer and local activist Noureddine Salman confirmed that immediate decisions were taken during the governor’s visit including activating public transportation.

The governor also decided to start paving the streets in the camp Salman pointed out.

The “Hand in Hand” campaign came shortly after the local authorities ordered to remove all buildings partially or completely destroyed.

Speaking to the PIC reporter the Palestinian refugee Muhammad al-Hamdan expressed his satisfaction with the governor’s visit expressing hope that his decisions will be implemented as soon as possible.

3000 volunteers were registered in “Hand in Hand” campaign to help remove all the rubble in the camp with the participation of a number of civil society institutions.

Yarmouk and its inhabitants have endured indescribable pain and suffering over years of the internal conflict in Syria.

Fierce fighting from the Syrian civil war has left only the shells of buildings still standing in the camp along with huge piles of rubble.
