Gaza’s Ramadan Offers a Different Taste

Zuhair Shareer a young Palestinian waits impatiently for the holy month of Ramadan to begin selling “samosa” in the busy markets of Gaza. He sees Ramadan as a chance to make additional money so he can provide for his family’s daily needs.

Shareer told the PIC reporter that he spends several hours standing in the markets to purchase all of his goods and that he makes between 10 and 20 shekels per day.

Ramadan is a very suitable opportunity for the unemployed young man to obtain gains even if they are very low according to 30-year-old Shareer a father of four children.

A short distance away Muhammad Abu Samaan is selling a variety of tablecloths which are in high demand during Ramadan.

Abu Samaan started his business during Ramadan and considered settling tablecloths as a temporary job opportunity.

The sale of tablecloths pickles and sweets according to Abu Samaan who has an intermediate university diploma in accounting is one of the many businesses that can be launched during Ramadan.

The Gazan man pointed out that he works hard to provide his family with the basic human needs in light of the high unemployment rate and the difficult economic conditions.

Gaza consistently faces high unemployment rates hitting about 60%.

According to Palestinian estimates the unemployment rate among youth in Gaza holding intermediate diplomas or university degrees reached 74 percent.

Mahmoud Makat on the other hand is compelled to look for a short-term job opportunity during Ramadan. One of many suggestions is to sell toys for kids and lanterns.

Makat revealed to our reporter that he is the only source of income for his family who weren’t provided with the social assistance they anticipated to cover their expenses during Ramadan.

According to Palestinian estimates 80% of Gaza’s just over 2 million people live in poverty and depend on international aid.
