Palestinian cancer patients deprived of care in northern Syria

Saturday 29-July-2023

Syrian activists in the Syrian opposition-held areas of northern Syria recently launched a campaign under the title: &ldquoSave Us&rdquo to draw attention to the suffering of cancer patients in those areas due to the lack of adequate equipment in hospitals and the difficulty of permission for cancer patients to enter Turkey.

There are an estimated 3300 people suffering from cancer in northwestern Syria many of them cannot be treated in Azaz and Afrin hospitals or enter Turkey after Turkish authorities made access to Syrian cancer patients increasingly complicated.

Media sources in northern Syria told the PIC reporter that several Palestinian cases are among the Syrian cancer patients. However no official authority is taking care of these cases.

Syrian activist Muhammad al-Ahmad affirmed that the median chemotherapy session cost ranges from 500 to 600 US dollars saying that every cancer patient needs a session every 21 days.

He also pointed out that the shortage of the adequate equipment and medical treatment in northern hospitals deepened the suffering of the cancer patients who are forced to wait to obtain an entry permit to Turkey to complete their treatment with high costs including transportation accommodation and so on.

For his part Syrian activist Majed Abdel Nour said that the number of cancer patients in northern Syria is increasing saying that the World Health Organization must examine the situation and call for an investigation into the rising cases.

Syrian journalists activists and celebrities declared total solidarity with cancer patients in northern Syria calling for immediate intervention to save patients and provide them with medical treatment.

About 1600 displaced Palestinian families live in northern Syria areas including 700 families in Idlib 500 families in Aleppo 250 families in Ballut camp and 70 families in Jenderes.

UNRWA deprives Palestinian refugees in northwestern Syria of relief aid and health and educational supplies under the pretext that they are in &ldquohard-to-reach areas&rdquo even though many international organizations operate in those areas.
