The Al-Ramdan refugee camp for Palestinians in Damascus countryside is experiencing a water shortage crisis largely due to faulty well water pumps and electricity cuts.
The camp’s residents have complained to the &ldquoGeneral Authority for Palestinian Arab Refugees&rdquo saying that the UNRWA school water well installations are completely broken and out of service.
The water well which is connected with the main reservoir is also out of service due to the pump failure.
In addition the government’s water pumping is very weak due to the inefficiency of pumping stations’ operational work.
In their complaint letter the residents called on the &ldquoGeneral Authority for Palestinian Arab Refugees&rdquo to intervene urgently to solve the water crisis.
Al-Ramdan camp which houses 4000 Palestinian refugees is not recognized by UNRWA as an official camp.
The camp is located near Dumayr town 45 kilometers northwest of Damascus and suffers from marginalization and lacks access to basic services in addition to its poor economic and social conditions.
Speaking to the PIC reporter the media director of the Action Group for the Palestinians of Syria Fayez Abu Eid said that al-Ramdan camp residents suffer from water cuts for long periods of time pushing them to buy water from mobile tanks at high prices.
He stressed that the camp water crisis is largely due to the hours-long electricity cuts affecting water pumps.
Abu Eid pointed out that local residents are demanding an electric generator for the well pumps lowering the pumps deeper into the boreholes and repairing the broken pumps in order to secure adequate quantities for drinking cooking personal hygiene and sanitation.
