Unexploded ordnance sow death and fear in war-torn Daraa camp

Tuesday 29-August-2023

In the Palestinian refugee camp of Daraa in southern Syria the smell of death has been haunting the rubble of buildings and destroyed neighborhoods for long years as a result of explosive remnants that were left by warring parties.

Fears about the widespread unexploded ordnance are not new but they came to the surface last Monday when a landmine exploded in the camp killing 33-year-old Mohamed al-Masri a Syrian national who lived in a nearby area.

According to local sources the market area in the camp contains landmines that are buried underground or hidden under rubble so they pose a great danger to the local residents and children who walk around as well as to workers who collect scrap.

According to official statistics four Palestinians had been killed by unexploded ordnance in different Palestinian refugee camps in Syria.

Across the country about half the population is estimated to be living in areas contaminated by unexploded ordnance the UN said in a report.
