Stripped of excuses: Gaza’s starvation exposes the world’s lack of moral courage

GAZA, (PIC)

The humanitarian calls and cries emanating from the mouths of the starving who are on the verge of certain death in the Gaza Strip are no longer due to the ongoing Israeli bombardment and aggression, but due to the famine that has ravaged them and sunk its fangs into their emaciated bodies, amid global collusion and silence on the closure of the Gaza crossings and the prevention of aid from entering. The famine has reached disastrous levels, to the extent that mulberry leaves have appeared in the markets of Gaza as a substitute for the vine leaves dish, revealing the nakedness of the entire world, which has been silently watching this heinous Zionist crime being perpetrated in broad daylight before everyone’s eyes, without a single person stirring.

The deadly famine in Gaza is no longer merely bells that the world tolls to warn of its danger, as the international humanitarian organizations have been doing – since the beginning of the aggression – in the luxury of issuing warning statements and numbing figures that no longer fatten or feed the people of Gaza, as the Zionist state continues and persists savagely on starving the people of the Strip to death. The sight of children dying of hunger has become almost a routine matter for an unjust world that watches and remains silent, not moving to stop the crime.

With the continuation of the famine and the disaster, social media pioneers document many scenes of extreme cruelty, more eloquent than the eloquence of the world’s statements and condemnations, one of which is the scene of the martyrdom of the child Azzam Al-Sha’er in northern Gaza, due to the lack of necessary food and medicine, amidst the Israeli war on the Strip.

This is not all, as the videos and pictures revealing the image of the famine monster that is devouring the bodies of children in Gaza, amid the collapse of the health system and the prevention of the entry of aid and basic medical and food supplies, in all its cruelty and crudeness, which the whole world should have moved to stop with real steps, away from mere condemnation and empty demands.

Journalist Anas Al-Sharif documents a painful scene of one of the small children in Gaza, in the hospital, lying in the healing incubator connected to medical devices, approaching death, in the face of the complete inability of the medical staff to provide any assistance to him, in the absence of the necessary medicines and food to save him.

As for the child Muhammad, who is three years old, he is another victim in northern Gaza, and the filmed scene that was documented shows his picture as he is writhing in pain from hunger, due to the deliberate policy of famine practiced by the Israeli occupation army in Gaza.

The communicators commenting on the scene see that this suffering could have been avoided, but the West refuses to force the Israelis to break the siege and open the Rafah crossing to deliver aid, in the midst of Arab and Islamic silence.

It is not only the children who arouse pain, regret and frustration, in light of the inability to save Gaza. This elderly Gazan man with a bent back waits for hours from early morning to get morsels of food for his family, revealing a small part of the daily suffering and misery endured by the people of Gaza every day, in order to make them able to stay alive, whose destinies are now being written by the criminals and terrorists in the Zionist entity with the blessing of the Western world and the Arab and Islamic silence.

And that is another elderly woman from Gaza screaming – if there are still Arabs and Muslims in this world, as she puts it – to inform them of the message that “Hunger has killed the young and the old… Save us, O world.”

And this is another painful scene, conveying part of the suffering experienced by our besieged people in northern Gaza – men, women and children standing for hours in the scorching heat to get water that is no longer available.

The scenes that knock on the conscience of the silent world do not stop, with those words uttered by the children of Gaza as they carry their empty vessels, waiting for someone to fill them to appease their hunger and save them from the monster of famine that has ravaged their bodies, to address a message to the whole world: “We are starving in the north (of Gaza).”

And that is another child crying from the intensity of the pain of hunger and frustration, and appealing to the unjust world, and cursing everyone who has let down Gaza, and has not moved a muscle in the face of scenes of people dying of hunger if they do not die from the Israeli bombardment.

The blogger Abdullah Al-Saidi documents a heart-wrenching scene of a grief-stricken father anxiously awaiting the last breaths of his child, who is on the verge of becoming a martyr due to starvation that has ravaged her frail body. The father is helpless in the face of his anguish and incapacity, able only to try to breathe life into her body and moisten it with tears.

Nothing is more excruciating than the scene showing one of Gaza’s children eating dry weeds due to the famine, while thousands of aid trucks amass at the crossings, most of which spoil as the world remains silent, powerless, and conspiring to prevent their entry to rescue the people of Gaza from the specter of hunger.

Catastrophic levels of food insecurity
Field and UN reports indicate that about 100% of Gaza’s population is affected by food insecurity, while vital sectors and facilities have reached the point of collapse, amid the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Strip since last October 7th.

An international report stated that around 96% of Gaza’s population faces severe levels of food insecurity. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, more than 495,000 people, or more than a fifth of Gaza’s population, are facing catastrophic levels of food insecurity, the most severe.

The report stated that “the space for humanitarian organizations to work is constantly shrinking, and the ability to safely deliver assistance to the population is deteriorating significantly and highly unstable.”

The Israeli attack on Rafah resulted in the closure of the land crossing on Gaza’s border with Egypt, which was a main route for delivering food and other supplies, in addition to being an evacuation point for civilians suffering from serious illnesses or injuries.
