A Palestinian doctor, who graduated last year, recounted how she was forced to perform surgeries to save the lives of Palestinian casualties due to the Israeli genocide, doing so alone after the medical staff were arrested in northern Gaza.
Dr. Asma Abu Hamada told Middle East Eye that she specialized in surgery in 2023, and with the onset of the genocide in the Gaza Strip, she found herself in a different situation due to injuries from intense Israeli bombardment.
She explained that she is the only surgeon at Al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza, noting that surgeons usually operate under the supervision of a doctor, but in her case, there is no one to oversee her work due to the arrest of one doctor by the occupation and the blockade of others in different hospitals.
She added that the director of Al-Awda Hospital, who specializes in pediatrics, has had to take on the role of anesthesiologist due to the lack of specialists, while she conducts the surgeries directly. So far, she has managed to save 11 injured individuals, mentioning that one patient died during surgery because there was no vascular surgeon available and due to the severity of the injury.
The Israeli occupation forces continue to commit acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip for the 408th consecutive day, targeting gatherings and tents of displaced persons with intense airstrikes and continuing their horrific crimes in northern Gaza, which has been under siege for over 40 days.
The toll of the genocide in Gaza has risen to 43,846 martyrs and 103,740 injured since October 7, 2023, according to the daily statistical report from the Ministry of Health on the victims of the genocide committed by the occupying army over the past 407 days in the Gaza Strip.
