Sabra and Shatila Massacre: An old witness on Israel’s impunity

On September 16 1982 Israeli troops surrounded Sabra and Shatila camps in the Lebanese capital Beirut preventing refugees from leaving.

Israel only allowed entry of the right wing Lebanese Christian Phalange militia giving them the green light for mass murder.

The Phalange militia murdered about 3500 Palestinians and Lebanese civilians during the 2-day massacre of Sabra and Shatila.

Bodies of men women elderly children and infants were scattered in the streets and alleys.

Eyewitnesses reported that horrific crimes were committed inside the two camps including extrajudicial killings torture sexual violence and mutilation.

In 1983 the UN found Israel guilty of the mass killing declaring it an act of genocide.

Ariel Sharon who later became Israel’s PM was seen as the main culprit responsible for the massacre. However he was not held accountable.

4 decades passed. Israel is still very accustomed to shedding the Palestinian blood and escaping responsibility.
